Petalis stands out for its unique properties. It functions as an acoustic mirror, directing sound from the source and amplifying it through six differently angled leaves. The combination of these pieces gathers and transfers the reflected sound to a focused space, enhancing the overall sound experience indoors.
The design of Petalis is realized through casting. Each leaf and the holder piece are made from aluminum, chosen for its density and sound-reflecting properties. To prevent rattling, a rubber gasket is placed between the leaf piece and the holder piece. The leaves vary in size and weight, with each leaf having a thickness of 10mm and weights ranging from 1.5kg to 2.7kg.
Interaction with Petalis is straightforward. The pieces are hung considering the area which will receive the reflected sound. The sound source's location and the interior space's geometry will guide which leaf piece should be used in a particular area. The leaves are slipped into the holder using a mallet, with the angle being crucial for the next hanging operation.
The Petalis project began in July 2017 and was completed in November 2017. The design process involved extensive research into how sound spreads, how sound waves reflect, and how existing solutions could be applied to the product. The research led to the understanding of the importance of the parabolic surface in sound reflection, which was incorporated into the final design.
Petalis faced challenges, the most significant being the choice of material. The material needed to be rigid, have a finishable surface, and be dense enough to reflect sound waves. The choice of material steered the project, resulting in a product that not only amplifies sound but also adds an aesthetic appeal to the interior space.
Petalis was recognized for its innovative design and functionality, winning the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to designs that exhibit outstanding expertise, creativity, and innovation, and Petalis certainly fits the bill. With its unique design and functionality, Petalis is set to revolutionize the indoor sound experience.
